What is Vertigo?

The recent attack of vertigo suffered by the golfer Jason Day in the US Open has brought vertigo into the news, but what is vertigo? Some people think of vertigo as a fear of heights but in fact that is acrophobia. Nor is vertigo a particular condition. It is in fact a symptom which consists of the sensation that you or things around you are spinning. This symptom can be caused by a number of different things including, but not limited to, problems in the way balance works in your inner ear.
