Looking for Positives

When something goes wrong, whether because of your own actions or because of events entirely beyond your control, it can be easy to see only the negatives and to feel that nothing can help or will get better or that what has been done cannot be reversed.  It is true that you cannot go back and change what has happened (though in some situations you can remedy it). However, even the darkest situation such as the death of a loved one or a dire change in your personal or relationship circumstances can bring with it positives. These can take many forms such as the impetus to make positive changes in your life or relationships or a new or deeper perspective on a situation or a chain of events set in motion which has unexpected upsides.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation, it is right to recognise accurately the difficulties that are presented but it is equally important to acknowledge or find genuine positives arising from the situation, as this will help you to maintain balance and move forward. So if you can, when you are experiencing difficulties, look for and remind yourself of any of the positives that co-exist or have arisen from the situation and use them to build your resilience and future.
