Focusing on the Negatives

Some self-help approaches advocate focusing on the positives. This can be good advice but it depends on the situation. There is an alternative approach that can also be helpful:

Reflect on some of your habitual behaviours - ask yourself what do you do habitually or often which actually is having a negative impact on your wellbeing or on the outcomes you are achieving in your life. The answer could include a wide variety of behaviours, such as:
  • Watching too many gloomy news bulletins
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Reacting angrily too often
  • 'Burning the candle at both ends' and not getting enough rest.
Whatever your negative behaviour is, once you have identified it, set yourself a goal of trying to reduce it significantly over the next few weeks and monitor the results!

  1. Excellent points and things to watch out for. People in a negative state of mind often end up intentionally or not surrounding themselves with negativity. You have to pay attention to what you're putting around yourself.
